Fifty years in one neighborhood
Chapel TNC began in 1974 with nine people in a front room on Washington Avenue. The building came eleven years later, paid for over two decades and finished only in 1997. Most of what we do now — the Wednesday meal, the winter shelter, the counseling that costs nothing — started because somebody in this congregation noticed a need and would not let it go.
Plain about what we believe
We are a Bible-teaching church in the historic Christian tradition: one God, the scriptures as our authority, Jesus at the center. Beyond that we hold our secondary convictions lightly and say so out loud, because a congregation that pretends to agree about everything ends up agreeing about very little. Everyone is welcome at every table here, whatever they have concluded so far.
Leading with Faith and Purpose
The people who carry the day-to-day work of this church — who they are, how the decisions get made, and how to reach any of them without going through a form.
A lead pastor, three associate pastors and a lay board of nine elected by the congregation for three-year terms. Every name, role and term is listed on the team page, and the board minutes are posted in the foyer the week after each meeting.
Any of the pastors will meet you for coffee — email the office and we will find a time within the fortnight. If you would rather write, the elders read everything sent to the board address and answer within two weeks.
Three, in this order: tell the truth, keep your promises, and stay where you are needed longer than is comfortable. They are pinned to the wall of the meeting room because they are easier to state than to keep.
